The Fourth Trimester

The fourth trimester is a way of referring to the first 12 weeks of your baby’s life and how it is actually an extension of life in the womb for them.

Understanding and utilising the differences between life in the womb and life in the world can help you to calm your baby, gently adjusting them to the world outside of the womb and helping you to cope with the first few weeks as new parents.

So, what is different?

Whilst in the womb your baby never experienced:

  • Hunger
  • Thirst
  • Space
  • Light
  • Loud Sounds
  • Fluctuating Temperatures
  • Trapped Wind
  • Air
  • Clothes
  • Reduced Contact
  • Not being Held

Your baby’s environment was constant, their every need was catered for and they always had the reassurance of rocking movement and familiar voices. Once born baby has quite a shock.

Their life as they know it has completely changed.

Newborns are unable to fend for themselves, so when their needs aren’t met, they cry – their only form of communication.

So how can you help them (and yourselves)?

  • Skin to Skin – Hopefully you have heard this term before, but probably just for those precious moments, hopefully hours after birth. Well, don’t stop there! By baby being directly on their parents skin they are provided with warmth and reassurance. It can also regulate their body temperature, heart rate, reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and create oxytocin (the love hormone). So keep it going, skin to skin continues to have benefits long after birth.
  • Demand Feeding – However you choose to feed your baby, feeding them on demand is key to not only their happiness but also their growth and well-being. Don’t be worried if baby seems hungry of doesn’t have what you would consider a ‘full feed’. They are the experts when it comes to how much food they need.
  • Baby Wearing – Using a sling allows baby to be close to you, enabling them to spend more time in the state of quiet alertness, which is the time when they learn. So keep them close, and talk to them, go about your daily business. After all, babies learn about the world from you. Simply watching you and picking up on your emotions is a great place to start! It’s never too early.
  • Movement – Your baby has always been used to your movement so they find it hard to adjust to being still. If you’re bored of simply carrying your baby try walking, rocking, dancing or swaying. Not only will your baby love it, it could be fun for you too. A sling will also make this so much easier for you.
  • Co-Sleeping or Bed-Sharing – Sleeping with baby close can allow you to tend to their every need through the night and reassures baby that they are safe. Their parent is right there, they can smell you and even touch you.
  • Swaddling – This can give your baby the sense of security they felt in the womb, and help them cope with the moro and startle reflex.

Many of these methods of recreating the womb-like environment for your baby can be used in conjunction with another. Sometimes one will work where it didn’t yesterday, and one parent may find something that works for them but not the other one. All of this is ok. These are tools to add to your growing parenting toolkit and nothing will unilaterally work for all babies and all parents in all situations. And that’s ok.

Don’t forget your world has changed too! While this early postpartum period is a time of great joy for many, it can also be a very vulnerable time. New families experience substantial physiological, social and emotional changes. So make sure you get help if you need it, find some local support and gain guidance before and after baby is born.

We discuss all of this in more detail in our antenatal workshops and baby classes. So, if you’re pregnant, or have recently had a baby get in touch.

Daisy is here for you! You’ve got this!

The Daisy Continuity

You rarely get pregnant around the same time as your friends, especially first babies! So it can feel a bit overwhelming and you may not have the support you need. It can be even more apparent if you are the first one of your friends to fall pregnant too.

That’s why Daisy offers a continuity of care to help you navigate your way through your pregnancy and parenting journey, whether this is your first or fifth baby!

Daisy Birthing is the first step on your 1001 day perinatal Daisy journey, suitable from 14 weeks of pregnancy. Enjoy pregnancy yoga-based movement and guided relaxations while learning antenatal education and breathing techniques to see you through each stage of your labour and more!

Then you can bring you birth partner along to our Daisy Active Birth Workshop where you have a safe space to help support each other and prepare for your confident birth. Learn how your birth partner can fully support you throughout your labour and inform themselves.

Or, if you are looking for the full antenatal and baby care package join me for 15 hours of all things pregnancy, labour and baby at Daisy Parent. A chance for you and your birth partner to work together to fully prepare not only for your upcoming  birth but also to understand how to care for your baby when they arrive. A safe space for you to discuss things you may not have considered together, and to help you make informed choices when the need arises.

But what about when baby is here?…..

This is the amazing thing about Daisy – we’re still here supporting you until your baby is around 2 years old.

Being a new mum can be an extremely anxious time, and add to that you wanting to attend baby classes but wondering how you can join in when you don’t know anyone.  Possibly questioning how you could possibly get through a class with a brand new baby – Will they cry? Will they sleep? Will they just feed? Will they need a change? Will anyone talk to me? and of course that little voice is screaming in your head “I don’t know what I’m doing!” “Everyone will have it all together and I’m just a mess!”

Well, when you attend a Daisy Baby class, you will have one familiar face – me! And anyone who knows me knows I love a chat! Each class always starts with asking you how you are so you will never walk into a room without knowing someone or without anyone speaking to you. As it is a safe space, soon the conversation will move onto how no-one knows what they’re doing and you will help each other realise that you are doing a fantastic job!

Part of Daisy Baby Tinies is to help you learn and connect with your baby, it is a completely baby-led class so if they need a feed, a change or a sleep go for it Each class is tailored to the babies and their needs at that time. And if they do cry, you’ll see a smile appear on my face – I just love the sound of babies crying.

When you move onto Daisy Baby Wrigglers and Cruisers, that’s when the fun really starts without losing the supportive nature of our classes.

But that’s not all, Daisy Mama is affectionately know as our Daisy Birthing without the bump class – it’s an hour a week of lovely postnatal movement and relaxation just for you. To help you find you again.

Daisy is unique because we provide that continuity through pregnancy into parenting, but you don’t have to have attended one class or workshop to attend another. They all work separately and you can attend just one – or all of them. All of our classes can be accessed at any time, and you can miss some and come back!

You are supported from the moment you join the Daisy community, and you can hang around for as long as you’d like to!

Why choose a Daisy class?

Who better to answer that question than mums that have previously attended my classes!

“I have, like you say, been with Daisy for almost a year now – and at the start of those antenatal classes we could never have even imagined what was to follow. For that reason more than ever, having those sessions to retreat to for some calm and focus was so helpful. The Classes helped me feel prepared and so much more educated ahead of the Birth. To then have that familiarity and continuity with Daisy Tinies has been so lovely and meeting other mums has been great. Thanks for all your advice and making the online sessions so fun still. Can’t wait for wrigglers and to eventually get back in person!!” Laura

Welcome to The Daisy Foundation Chichester, Havant & Emsworth!

Hi, I’m Terri and I offer a selection of antenatal and baby classes for expectant and new mums across Chichester, Havant, Emsworth and the surrounding areas. I am here to support your journey from early pregnancy right through to toddlerhood – a continuous perinatal support that helps you to achieve a positive pregnancy, confident birth and an informed and supported journey to confident motherhood.

I am a mum to 3 children aged 17, 6 and 3 and having attended Daisy Foundation classes with my two youngest children I know first hand the value of Daisy.  I knew as soon as I started classes that every mum-to-be and new mum needed to receive the non-judgemental, supportive, evidence based, and community focused world of Daisy, the world that helped me through two difficult rainbow pregnancies giving me time for me, time to prepare and time to enjoy how my world was changing once again. My Daisy classes were the highlight of my week both during pregnancy and as a new mum.  I loved them so much I trained to become a Daisy Teacher in 2019 when my youngest child was just 10 months old.

Why The Daisy Foundation?

Continuity of care!

As a Perinatal educator I will remain a part of your journey through pregnancy (from as early as 14 weeks) right up to your baby’s 2nd birthday.
